Micronutrients part ii: B Vitamins

  B Vitamins Lets move on to the next in our series of micronutrients, B vitamins - certainly not the B-list celebs of the micronutrient world. There are eight separate micronutrients that make up the band commonly known as 'The B Vitamins' - responsible for such well known hits as 'Wouldn't It Be Niacin', 'Too Little, Too Folate' and 'Smile Like You Thiamine It'. B Vitamins are grouped together because a) they are all water soluble (meaning they dissolve in water), and b) their primary purpose in the human body is as coenzymes or cofactors for many enzymes. Because they are water soluble B vitamins are not stored in the body easily (unlike fat soluble vitamins), this means that they must be continually replenished from our diet. Being cofactors or coenzymes means that they are required to increase the diversity of chemical reactions enzymes can perform as well as the rate and efficiency with which they can perform them.
